Antranig Boghosian. Armenian terrorist. Member of the illegal JCAG.
He with his militant friend Raffi Elbekian assassinated Galip Balkar(47), the Turkish Ambassador to Yugoslavia in central Belgrade as his car stopped at a red light on 9 March 1983. Mortally wounded in this attack, Balkar died on 11 March. Turkish driver, Necati Kayar, is shot in the stomach. As the two assailants flee from the scene, they were bravely pursued by Yugoslav citizens. Antranig Boghosian – alias Harutiun (Krikor) Levonian shoots and wounds a Yugoslav Colonel, and is in turn apprehended by a member of the Yugoslav Secret Service. The second terrorist, Raffi Elbekian, opened fire on civilians who were chasing him, killing a young student and wounding a young girl. Boghosian was paralyzed in the shoot-out. Both Boghosian and Elbekian were convicted of murder and sentenced to 20 years on 9 March 1984, exactly one year after the incident. They were released on 24 April 1987 after serving only four years in prison. Greece granted shelter to the terrorists and Turkey accused Greece for continuing its support for Armenian terrorists. Soon after his release, Levonian was allowed entry into Greece and the Greek authorities provided the much needed medical treatment. Both terrorists lived ‘underground in Greece, South (Greek) Cyprus and Lebanon until 1995. Then they moved to Armenia. Anonymous called to media organizations in Athens (Greece), Paris (France) and Beirut (Lebanon) said Armenian terrorists (JCAG) were responsible.
The Athens based ‘Committee for the Defense of Armenian Political Prisoners,’ a group that is affiliated with the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnag Party) played a major role in securing the release of Levonian.
